SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Wilmot Union High School serves students with disabilities through a variety of educational placements and programming supports/modifications. Each student's Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed through a team meeting. Participants at an IEP meeting typically include the student, parents/guardians, special education case manager, school counselor, regular education teacher(s) and the school psychologist/evaluation team chair. Other attendees may include the speech language pathologist, specially designed physical education instructor, consultants for vision impaired or hearing impaired, audiologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, and/or a school administrator. Each student's IEP is reviewed/revised at least annually. At least once every three years, a review (re-evaluation) of whether the student continues to require/benefit from special education services is conducted.
Services provided for students are based on individual needs and range from full inclusion in regular education classes to self-contained programming within a special education classroom. The majority of students receiving special education services at Wilmot Union High School attend a combination of regular education and supported classes with modifications. Some students attend additional (or exclusively) self-contained special education classes and/or a resource class. Student's schedules are reviewed and approved by the assigned case manager and school counselor to assure compliance with student needs and each student's IEP.
Transition programming begins at age fourteen and is part of every student's IEP, emphasizing the transition to life after secondary school. The goal of Special Education is aligned with the Mission Statement of Wilmot Union High School, "...to provide knowledge, values, and skills appropriate to all students which will promote their success in our ever changing world."
