She earned her Bachelor's Degree at UW-Whitewater, and her Educational Technology Master's Degree from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. Mrs. Serkowski is also a certified Microsoft Office Specialist in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook 2003 and has a Adobe Dreamweaver certificate. She has been teaching at Wilmot for eight years. She loves teaching technology classes because technology is so important in today's society and has a place in all careers. Business is the core of our economy and every citizen should have basic business knowledge. In this course, students will gain the basic understanding of the different types of businesses, business management and ownership, our government’s role in business as well as a unit and project in international business. | Top | |
| Word Processing & Information Technologies, (BIT121) Prerequisites None Credit 0.50 Grades 9-12 |
Students will cover a variety of computer topics and software use in this course as well as review keyboarding skills. Students will start using the NEW Microsoft Word 2007, by creating and modifying text documents, and placing graphics, diagrams, tables, etc. Other Microsoft Office applications will be introduced including PowerPoint 2007, Excel 2007, Access 2007 and Publisher 2007. Using a scanner and digital camera to import images into these applications will be included. Another element of this course includes learning the current uses and background of Information Technologies such as: what to look for when buying a new computer, how computers work, the parts of a computer and what the inside looks like, computer/technology terms, how to save information onto different devices like CD’s, flash drives, etc. Also included is a unit covering the Internet, Internet safety, online Identity Theft, and different online communications, (E-mail, IM, Discussion Boards, Blogs, Wikis, etc.) |

| Microsoft Excel & Access 2007, (BIT123) Prerequisites: Word Processing/Information Technologies Credit 0.50 Grades 9-12 |
This course will teach students the 2007 version of Microsoft Access and Excel. In Access, students will learn how to create databases using tables, forms, reports, and queries. In Excel, students will create spreadsheets using formulas and will create and modify charts and graphs. Students may qualify for credit at Gateway Technical College and also have the opportunity to become Microsoft Certified Applications Specialist (MCAS) certified for Access and Excel here at our Wilmot MCAS Testing Center. Students who have taken Word Processing & Information Technologies or students who have previously taken Computer Applications or Access 2003 are eligible to take this course to learn the new Office 2007 versions. |

One of the most dynamic and fastest growing areas of business is MARKETING!! In the U.S., one in every six jobs is marketing based and this course can give you an insight on potential Marketing careers. In this course, students will gain an understanding of basic marketing foundations and functions and learn what is involved in creating a business, its products and how to promote them. Students will develop accounting skills through the use of the paper and pencil approach as well as small business accounting software programs. A six-week simulation is done at the end of the year, which summarizes all the activities. This course is a must if planning a career in business or for personal use. Students may qualify for credit at Gateway Technical College. |

Students will continue to review keyboarding skills and learn to format the following important business documents in Word 2007: memos, business and personal business letters, invoices, purchase orders, meeting agendas, meeting minutes, and outlines. Students will also use the mail merge function and learn to create their own address labels and envelopes. A brief unit in creating Web pages in Word will also be covered as well as creating some fun publications in Microsoft Publisher. Students will then complete a word processing career simulation at the end of the course. |

Students will create page design, integrate text and graphics from other software programs, edit the copy, adjust the graphics and add design touches to produce professional-quality documents quickly and easily using InDesign. Students will use their understanding of the program's structure and concepts along with a digital camera and scanner to produce a variety of documents. Learn the program used by the professionals. This course builds on the skills learned in Word Processing & Information Technologies by learning more of the latest version of Microsoft Word (2007). We will also create a multimedia project in PowerPoint 2007 using music, transitions, etc., and learn how to create publications in Publisher 2007. At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to become Microsoft Certified Applications Specialist certified in Word 2007 and PowerPoint 2007. This certification is in very high demand in the workplace, showcasing skills learned using the new Office 2007. Wilmot High School is a certified testing center for MCAS certifications, allowing our students to take these exams on-site and at a discounted price. Students who have taken Word Processing & Information Technologies or students who have previously taken Computer Applications are eligible to take this course to learn the new Office 2007 versions. |

This year long course will teach students to effectively manage a business. Students will learn all aspects of running a business and apply what they learn by managing the learning lab (the school store). Students are responsible for selecting merchandise, pricing, promotion and training employees. Students may achieve a Professional Sales Certificate from DPI in Madison by completing this program. Students will learn about careers, business practices, and how to conduct themselves in a professional and ethical manner. This program also combines in-school instruction with paid employment in an area business. Early release time is available. Students may achieve a an Apprenticeship Certificate from the Department of Workforce Development, Marketing Skills Certificate or Employability Certificate from DPI in Madison by completing this program. One credit is obtained from the classroom experience and an additional 2 credits may be obtained from work experience (credits are determined by the amount of hours worked). |

This course is designed to teach students how to create Web sites using the most popular software in the Web design industry, Adobe CS3 (Creative Suite 3). The class will begin with a review of the World Wide Web information learned in Word Processing & Information Technologies, and then move on to Web design basics. Students will develop Web pages in Adobe Dreamweaver, and learn basic HTML code (HyperText Markup Language). Students will be then be given the opportunity to design and maintain their own Web site using various tools and additional software programs including Flash (to make animations), Fireworks (3D creation software), and Adobe Acrobat for text files. | Top | |

Financial Literacy will enable students to make informed decisions about planning, organizing and allocating their financial resources. Students will gain an understanding of bank services, insurance, credit cards, loans (car, home and education), mortgages, budgeting, investing, retirement strategies, and estate planning. Students will also learn how to correctly fill out job applications, create a resume, cover letter, thank you letter and learn the proper procedure for interviewing. This course is designed to create and update Web pages for Wilmot Union High School’s Web site. Students will review how to use Adobe’s Creative Suite 3 (CS3) Software, including Dreamweaver, and more skills in creating animations and images in Flash and Fireworks. From there, they will be assigned Web pages on the school’s site to create and update online. When possible, students will take fun pictures at school events, interview students and staff members, etc., to gather additional information for their pages. | Top | |
